What this result means
The estimate converts driving distance into battery energy use and then adjusts for electricity lost during charging.
How the EV Charging Cost Calculator works
Energy consumption and charging loss vary with vehicle, speed, temperature, and charging setup.
The calculator does not fetch live prices or rates. That is intentional: you provide the tariff, price, rate or cost that actually applies to your situation, which makes the assumptions visible and avoids presenting stale market data as current.
How to get a more useful estimate
- Use your vehicle’s real-world consumption where possible.
- Home, workplace, and public charging may have different rates; calculate them separately if needed.
- Charging losses vary by charger, temperature, and battery conditions.
Scenario check
If charging happens in more than one place, run separate scenarios for home and public charging or use a blended electricity price. A vehicle that is cheap to charge at home can have a very different monthly cost when fast charging dominates. Keep the same monthly distance when comparing scenarios so only the charging assumptions change.
Important limitations
- Public charging session fees are excluded unless reflected in the energy rate.
- Battery degradation and charging-equipment purchase cost are excluded.
- Driving efficiency varies with speed, climate, tires, and terrain.
Frequently asked questions
What are charging losses?
Not every kWh drawn from the wall reaches the battery. Some energy is lost in charging electronics, cabling, thermal management, and the battery itself.
Should I use km or miles?
This tool is built around kilometers and kWh per 100 km. Convert your mileage before entering it if your data uses miles.
Does this compare an EV with petrol?
Use the separate EV-vs-petrol calculator for a direct energy-cost comparison.
